December 2007

You are currently browsing the monthly archive for December 2007.

Walk down from the Ridge to Lakkar Bazaar in the evening after dark and you find scores of hawkers occupying the road side, selling everything from soup, eggs, sandwiches, shawls, the laughing Buddhas, fruits etc. Walking on this stretch has become a nightmare as almost half the road is occupied by these hawkers and the people availing their ’services’. The best place is occupied by the guy selling chicken soup just next to the tree on Ridge. He sits comfortably on the bench with a small table in front selling hot soup and boiled eggs besides the garbage dumper shouting Chicken soup… Boiled aandey. This entire stretch has become extremely dirty as most of the hawkers sell eatables and the disposable plates, left overs etc. are all spewed on the road. The city has gone to dogs with so much filth around. I have doubts about the basic cleanliness and hygiene of these people. These guys look extremely dirty and probably work as laborers during day time. Read the rest of this entry »

Merry Christmas!

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I hope you are having a relaxed vacation this week. This time of the year, warm winter sun at Kotgarh is something I miss the most. An early snowfall at Shimla had rekindled hopes of White Christmas but it was a sunny hot day at Shimla today. Way the temperature has been shooting up, snow seems a distant possibility for the 31st also.

Having lost a few close family members in December, I stay away from all the celebrations and revelry associated with the year end. December makes me sad! I am looking forward to pack my bags and rush off to Kotgarh as soon as I can.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a great New Year ahead. Here is a greeting card for your Christmas amusement.

Hill views

It is vacation time again and you must be feeling the itch to travel to hills and unwind yourself for a couple of days. Shimla hotels are all full besides Shimla city is not an ‘ideal’ place for a vacation. Need proof.. just see the post below!!

Some good destinations around Shimla with decent places to stay is all I am going to discuss today. Read the rest of this entry »

Stinking, Filthy Shimla

Garbage

In a strange move the Municipal Corporation removed the dumpers meant for collecting garbage from the colonies and the garbage being collected is thrown in open on main roads. I can see dumpers only at Lakkar Bazaar, near the Ridge and in the wards of the Mayor and Dy. Mayor. Other than that it is the same position as shown in this picture. The MC collects crores in the form of house tax but is not able to deliver a proper garbage disposal system to the city. The situation has become worse since the present Mayor and Dy. Mayor has taken over. The MC cancelled a contract with the company looking after garbage collection earlier. This was fine but they have failed to provide an alternate system. The ‘I don’t care’ attitude of the MC will ultimately hamper the tourism business in the city.

The MC Shimla is playing a cruel joke with the health of residents of Shimla. With winters approaching, all the water seeping into the baowris will get contaminated. Plus garbage lying in open attracts all kinds of rodents leading to catastrophic situation in future. How else you think plague happened in Surat!

MC Shimla has a disaster waiting to happen in its hands.

Closer look at the Snowline

As a policy, I had made a commitment to myself that I would not let the politicians and the state elections enter this blog but here is an interesting report on all the bad and ugly people contesting Himachal elections.

Check out the criminal record, the crores your Netaji has amassed before you vote and make a fool of yourself again! :-)

Driving in snow

With roads all blocked from Kufri onwards and no chance of reaching Kotgarh, today made a small detour to Kasauli with family. This year we have not been beyond Shimla, thanks to the new addition in the family, the 11 month old toddler. Actually mothers get hyper with babies. It was with great cajoling that Anu agreed to a day trip to Kasauli.

Drive from Taradevi onwards was nerve breaking. With news of snowfall getting flashed in the  plains, traffic was much heavier. The pleasant drive down the winding hill roads became a nightmare, when faced with hundreds of cars coming up, carrying the horrific driving habits of the plains with them. The biggest problem with these drivers from the plains is they drive on the middle of the road. They need to understand that driving in the hills is a completly different ball game.If any of the urbane drivers happens to read this… here are a few rules for safe driving in the hills.
